Best Moveset For Primarina In Pokémon GO

Is Primarina Good In Pokémon GO?
Popplio's final evolution, Primarina, is the star of the show right now in Pokémon GO, thanks to the August 2024 Community Day event. With loads of Popplio spawning in the wild around the world, a boosted chance of finding a Shiny version, and a new featured attack for Primarina, Trainers will want to know if this final evolution is any good, and what its best moveset looks like.
Primarina is a dual Water/Fairy-type creature that first appeared in Pokémon Sun & Moon's Alola region. It's the final evolution of Popplio, one of the region's starter trio, making it a pretty popular Pokémon. Unfortunately, it's never quite lived up to the expectations set by other Water-type starters like Blastoise and Swampert. That could be about to change, though, with the addition of Hydro Cannon to its moveset in Pokémon GO.

Best Moveset For Primarina In Pokémon GO
Hydro Cannon Is An Excellent Addition To Its Move Pool
The best moveset for Primarina in PvP Trainer Battles is Charm as a Fast Attack, with Disarming Voice and Hydro Cannon as Charged Attacks. Charm is an excellent Fast Attack in general, and is usually recommended for any Pokémon that has access to it. While the move's energy generation is low, it's capable of dishing out impressive damage for a Fast Attack, especially when facing off against Dark, Dragon, and Fighting-type opponents.
Pairing Charm with the Charged Attack Disarming Voice gives Primarina a solid Fairy-type offensive to use in battle, which is where it shines best. Ideally, you'll also have the Water-type Charged Attack Hydro Cannon as a backup option. This is one of the best Charged Attacks of all time in Pokémon GO, having already elevated the likes of Swampert, Greninja, and Feraligatr, so it will be interesting to see how it performs on Primarina.
The best thing about this particular moveset is that every attack gets STAB (Same-Type Attack Boost), meaning they'll deal extra damage to your opponents.
If you're looking to use Primarina as an attacker in Raid Battles, you've got two options. Either go with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon to create a Water-type build, or choose Charm and Moonblast to create a Fairy-type build. Primarina can perform well in either of these roles. It won't be the best Pokémon you can get in either category, but it's definitely worth having one of each type to support your main attackers.
All Moves Primarina Can Learn In Pokémon GO
Focus On Fairy & Water-Type Attacks
Primarina can learn two Fast Attacks and five Charged Attacks, including the newly-added featured attack Hydro Cannon. These attacks span across Water, Fairy, and Psychic types. You can see all of these moves below:
Fast Attacks
Move | Type |
---|---|
Charm | Fairy |
Waterfall | Water |
Charged Attacks
Move | Type |
---|---|
Disarming Voice | Fairy |
Hydro Cannon | Water |
Hydro Pump | Water |
Moonblast | Fairy |
Psychic | Psychic |
All of these moves can be learned at random when evolving a Primarina or taught by using a regular Fast TM or Charged TM. The exception is Hydro Cannon, which is a featured attack. This means it can only be learned by evolving a Primarina during a special event, such as a Community Day, or by using an Elite Charged TM. These items are rare, but it's worth using one to get a Primarina with Hydro Cannon as it's an essential move.
If you missed out on your chance to evolve a Primarina that knows Hydro Cannon during the August 2024 Community Day and you don't have an Elite Charged TM, the good news is that it should return in the December 2024 Community Day event. These typically last an entire weekend and feature every Pokémon that's headlined a Community Day throughout the year.

A Bright Future In The Master League & Raid Battles
With a huge number of changes coming to the Pokémon GO Battle League in the MAX OUT season, which begins on September 3, 2024, it's hard to say exactly where Primarina will fit in with the new meta. However, a quick look at PvPoke's preview of the upcoming season suggests that Primarina could be a spicy pick in the Master League, with key wins over Dragonite, Dialga, Zekrom, and even the imposing Complete Forme Zygarde.
Things aren't looking quite so good for Primarina in the Ultra League or the Great League, so it's up to you whether it's worth using all those resources to power up a Primarina high enough for the Master League. It's going to be expensive. On the other hand, if you're looking to use Primarina as a Water-type or Fairy-type attacker in Raid Battles, it should be an excellent addition to your Pokémon GO collection, so evolve two with good IVs if you can.
