When writing an obituary, leave out details that could be used for identity theft, such as the deceased's date and place of birth, middle name, maiden name and mother's maiden name. And don't include the deceased's home address.

It is not considered disrespectful to not have an obit, and many families choose to skip them. Though there is no legal obligation to publish an obituary, families should make the decision based on their preferences, the wishes of their loved one, and the needs of their extended family and friend network.

In some instances, honesty is the most effective method. If a family member who has been at odds with others contacts you, explain that you would love to have them attend, but that you are concerned that doing so would create tension at the service.

Funerals aren't usually an “invite-only” event. If you knew the deceased, attending the funeral is an opportunity for you to remember their life and pay your respects. If you did not know the deceased but are close to the grieving family, then it is a way for you to show your support to them.

Announce the death and include their full name, age, hometown, and date of death. Include a brief summary of their life. Mention family members who have already passed away, as well as surviving family members. Share funeral or memorial service details, including whether they are public or private events.

In general, it's best to avoid leaving out essential family members‚ even if they're estranged. This could cause hurt feelings.
