Early Life

Russell Westbrook was born in Long Beach, California on November 12, 1988.

He is the son of Russell Westbrook Jr. and Shannon Horton. He has a younger brother named Raynard.

Growing up in Hawthorne, Westbrook and his best friend, Khelcey Barrs III, hoped to go to UCLA and play together. However, in May 2004, Barrs died from an enlarged heart during a pickup game.

Career

Drafted by Oklahoma, Russell Westbrook showed the first glimpse of his talent in 2009 when he scored his first triple-double. He eventually ended up on that season’s NBA All-Rookie First Team and was placed at number four in the lineup.

In Oklahoma’s second season, the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated his team in the first round. Still, Russell concreted his place on the team with a final personal score average of 16.1 points.

In the 2011 Western Conference Tournament, he played a significant role in helping his team reach the finals. The same year, the coaches included him in the squad for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game, and owing to his exuberant performance, his team reached the finals for the first time since the franchise was reintroduced.

Due to a knee injury, he missed the first two games of the 2013-14 season. In his comeback match against the New York Knicks, he led his team to an explosive win and scored 14 points.

In a 2015 match against the New Orleans Pelicans, Westbrook scored 48 points, breaking his previous career high of 45. He returned for the All-Star Tournament 2015 after a long hiatus due to surgeries.

In the 2015-16 season, he scored 18 triple-doubles, a record previously held by Magic Johnson in the 1981-82 season, and achieved 18 triple-doubles.

NBA Salary

In 2008, Russell Westbrook signed a four-year rookie contract worth $16.35 million with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The deal was fully guaranteed, with Westbrook earning $3.5 million in his first NBA season.

His annual salary gradually increased, reaching $4.1 million by the end of the contract.

In 2012, Westbrook signed a five-year rookie extension with Oklahoma valued at $78.6 million. Once again, this deal was fully guaranteed, with Westbrooks’s average annual salary increasing from $4.1 million to $15.7 million.

His highest-earning year on the deal was 2015, when he earned $16.7 million before the final year of the contract was voided to negotiate a new deal.

In 2016, he signed a three-year veteran extension with the Thunder valued at $85.6 million. His average annual salary almost doubled, earning him $26.5 million in 2016 and $28.5 million in 2017.

In 2018, Westbrook signed his first nine-figure contract, skipping the 100s entirely and going straight for a five-year $206.8 million agreement at Oklahoma.

Under the new deal, Westbrook would only play for one season with Oklahoma before being traded to the Houston Rockets in 2019. He earned $37.3 million with the Rockets before playing for the Washington Wizards in 2020, earning $40.2 million.

In 2021, he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, earning $44.2 million for the year.

For the 2022/23 season, Westbrook played the first half with the Lakers, earning $31.1 million, before being traded briefly to the Utah Jazz, who paid him $15.9 million. He then finished out the season with the LA Clippers, who paid him $800,000, bringing his total earnings for the year up to $47.8 million.

Westbrook recently signed a two-year contract with the Clippers in 2023, valued at $7.9 million, which earned him $3.8 million for the season just gone.

Thus far in his NBA career, Westbrook has earned $340.3 million, with $4 million remaining on his contract. Of those earnings, $166.9 million came from his time playing at Oklahoma.

Endorsem*nts

During his career, Russell Westbrook has become one of the league’s highest-endorsed players, earning an estimated $35 million/year through endorsem*nts alone. The majority share of that figure comes from his 15-year relationship with Nike, which began in 2013.

Westbrook’s initial Nike endorsem*nt under the Jordan brand had a length of five years; in 2017, Nike offered him a 10-year extension. According to Forbes, Westbrook earns an estimated $12 million/year from the deal.

His first signature shoe was released that same year, and it bucked the typical naming trend from most signature shoe lines. Instead, Russell’s shoe was called the Jordan Why Not. Since signing his mega-extension, Westbrook has released six signature Jordan shoes.

In addition to his Jordan deal, Westbrook has also been active with various commercial work and brand advertisem*nts, including the following:

  • Ozarka Water (2011)
  • Footlocker Commercial (2017)
  • Men in Black: International Movie Promo (2019)
  • True Religion
  • Mountain Dew
  • Pepto Bismol
  • Hennessey
  • BancFirst

Westbrook is estimated to have earned nearly $200 million in his career just from endorsem*nts. He now earns more yearly money through endorsem*nts and sponsorships than his NBA salary.

Favorite Quotes from Russell Westbrook

“Once you put in all the work pre-practice and post-practice and see it in a game and see it in play, that’s a great feeling.
Russell Westbrook

“Messy stuff irritates me. I don’t like messiness. If you leave something around my house, I’ll tell you to move it back, clean it up, throw it in the trash – don’t matter, just get rid of it. I need stuff neat, organized. And once I start cleaning stuff, I don’t stop until it’s done. Otherwise, I’m irritated all day.” – Russell Westbrook

“If I get to know somebody, I’ll open up, but other than that I like to sit back and observe things.” – Russell Westbrook

“Because [Russel Westbrook] is so rare and impacts the game in so many different ways, you see the usage and the amount of time he’s playing and say, ‘is this sustainable?’ I look at it the other way. Are we playing the right way, are we playing together as a team, and what are his minutes like? This is not a guy that’s playing 42 minutes a night. When he goes out there he’s going to play to who he is, and I think he also understands that in order for our team to be the best we can be he’s got to incorporate and help everybody grow as players.” – Russell Westbrook
