Lovely news. While applying for grants isn't a KPI, SDSU has also made a strong institutional commitment to supporting faculty members in applying for funding. What has this looked like as a new assistant professor? Institutional resources that have enabled me to do the following between January 2023 and now:a) carry out a grant-funded project;b) apply for 2 organizational awards (edit: both funded);c) apply for 2 foundation & NIH grants;d) prep 2 additional NIH grants to be submitted next month & in fall;e) map out plans to apply for smaller awards/grants, an Office of Special Education Programs personnel prep grant to support students, and begin charting a pathway toward NSF mechanisms (thanks to DRI resources plus the Tech Transfer Office) over the course of AY2023-24.

🌟 Exciting News from DFGN! 🌟We're thrilled to announce that the second edition of DFGN.R has reached new heights, and the conference proceedings are now public 🚀!DFGN.R 2023, our annual research conference, once again brought together brilliant minds from around the world. This year, in collaboration with Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, and hosted at METU Design Factory in Ankara, Turkey, we embarked on a journey that transcended borders and disciplines.🌍 65 Authors from 15 different countries joined us.📜 22 thought-provoking contributions were presented.🔍 These studies offer diverse perspectives on designing for multiplicity. At DFGN.R 2023, we delved deep into the concept of "Multiplicity." In a world where complex challenges abound, we believe in the power of combining various approaches, cultures, disciplines, ways of thinking to make a meaningful impact. No one discipline can single-handedly solve the issues we face, instead, we aim to spark interactions and collaborations that lead to innovative solutions. During the conference, inspiring people from around the world shared their insights, sparking reflections on key topics:📚 Education: How can diverse teaching and learning methods in higher education foster innovation?🌐 Culture: In what ways does design-centered education promote inclusivity, ethics, and diverse perspectives?💻 Technology: How do recent technological breakthroughs influence education, inclusivity, and the celebration of diversity and multiplicity?A massive thank you to all the incredible individuals who made this conference a success and to our dedicated Scientific Advisory Board: Luca Iandoli, Matteo Vignoli, Assaf Krebs (PhD), Anita Kocsis, Arzu Gönenç Sorguc. If you want to get to know more about the DFGN.R 2023, check the link below to access our conference proceedings and stay inspired:https://lnkd.in/gB8cypNSThank you for being part of our journey, and let's keep the momentum going! 💡 #DFGNR2023 #DesigningForMultiplicity #Education #ResearchConference

Last week at the AAAS annual meeting in Denver, Dr. Keith R. Yamamoto gave a compelling opening plenary on the ‘transparent’ walls that hold back the #STEM enterprise. One of these walls is that between science and the rest of society. It is critical for us all to work to break down this wall that makes science, scientists, and scientific institutions invisible and mysterious to many Americans. With the #SOTU upcoming, we must commit to communicating the importance of research to a better future: Better health, economic prosperity, enhanced global competitiveness, and national security!

Citizen science for changeAt the beginning of April, the ECSA Conference 2024 was held as the major European event on citizen science. The event, organized by the ECSA - European Citizen Science Association, hosted talks, presentations, workshops and poster sessions on advances in the field of citizen science. Science For Change could not miss this special event, and we participated in no less than 9 sessions during the conference. For 3 days, Vienna became theEuropean capital of citizen science. This year’s ECSA Conference, brought together experts in the field of citizen science, revolved around the theme of ‘change’. And when it comes to change, Science For Change has a lot to say, because it is in our DNA. One thing is clear:citizen science makes science advance in all fields of knowledge in an inclusive manner. But in order to advance, more resources are needed for projects to be sustainable and maintain their communities. Achieving tangible impacts takes time, and especially getting those impacts reflected in public policies that are more aligned with society’s needs to address complex challenges. At a time when digitalization and artificial intelligence are advancing by leaps and bounds, we cannot leave anyone behind. The opportunity is enormous, including the generation of new datasets for monitoring the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but institutional support for the practice must continue. So,how can we strengthen support for citizen science? It is time to reflect on the transformative impact of this practice, move beyond pilot projects, andexploit the results achieved so far.It is like a long-distance race, now we have the know-how, the knowledge and the methodologies,it is time to go one step further and continue betting on collaborative science. SFC will continue to support this type of collaborative research, and we hope that at the ECSA Conference in 2026, which will take place in Oulu (Finland), many of these questions will be answered.#CitizenScience #CollaborativeResearch Rosa Arias Blanca Guasch Balcells Diana Reinoso Botsho Mireia Ros Sònia Roura Valls Comunicació ambientalhttps://lnkd.in/d3nVa5QJ

World Science Day for Peace and Development, 10 November 2023 Theme: Building Trust In ScienceCelebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The Day offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing your own event or activity on the day. The role of science in shaping our collective future can only be fulfilled when there is trust in science. It is trust in science that fuels the development and application of evidence-based solutions to our world’s multifaceted challenges. Trust in science is a complex issue. It affects the way in which scientists operate and the way science is perceived by society. Also, enhancing trust in science strengthens science-based policy decisions and society’s support for their application

I am absolutely thrilled to share the exciting news that I had the honor of being a keynote speaker at the esteemed 3-day conference of the 2nd International Conference on Trending Research and Innovation in Forensic Science Field (ICTRIFS-23). This remarkable opportunity underscores the paramount importance of disseminating scientific information and effectively communicating the marvels of science to a wide array of audiences. The process of dissemination is the cornerstone upon which progress is built, as it bridges the gap between pioneering research and its practical applications. By distilling complex scientific concepts into relatable narratives, we empower not only fellow experts but also policymakers, industry leaders, and the public with knowledge that fuels informed decision-making, sparks innovation, and fosters collaboration. The ICTRIFS-23 conference exemplifies this critical exchange, serving as a hub for groundbreaking ideas and cutting-edge advancements in forensic science. As we celebrate the achievements of this conference, let us also recognize the collective responsibility to continue championing the dissemination of scientific information. I urge all of us to engage in open dialogues, share discoveries, and ensure that the wonders of science are accessible to everyone. Together, we can accelerate progress, inspire future generations, and pave the way for a brighter, more informed future.#forensicscience #innovation #ForensicAnthropology#sciencecommunication #AFRS
